How Balzac's Coffee Started
The very first Balzac's coffee shop opened in 1996. It was in Stratford, Ontario. A clever business person named Diana Olsen started the company. She named it after a famous French writer, Honoré de Balzac. He was known for loving coffee!
Balzac's coffee shops offer many different kinds of drinks. They serve regular coffee and special "fair trade" blends. Fair trade means the coffee growers get a fair price for their beans. They also have espressos, hot chocolate, and various cold drinks. Each Balzac's location has a unique poster designed just for that community.
Balzac's Grows and Expands
Balzac's Coffee even appeared on a TV show called Dragon's Den. This show is where people with business ideas try to get money from investors. Two of the investors on the show decided to put money into Balzac's Coffee.
In 2016, the company started selling coffee beans in grocery stores. Now you can buy Balzac's coffee beans in stores like Loblaws, Sobeys, and Whole Foods across Canada. This made their coffee available to even more people.
Awards and Ownership
In 2024, Balzac's Anniversary Blend coffee won an award. It was named "Best New Product" in the Whole Bean Coffee group by Western Grocer. This shows how much people enjoy their coffee.
Today, Balzac's Coffee is owned by a company called District Ventures Capital. This company is led by a well-known investor named Arlene Dickinson.
