Playing for Clubs
Bambang started his senior football career with Persija Jakarta. He played for several local clubs when he was younger. In the 1999–2000 Liga Indonesia season, he was the top goal scorer for Persija with 24 goals. In 2000, he briefly joined EHC Norad in the Dutch Third Division. However, he returned to Persija after only four months. This was the only Indonesian club he ever played for.
Winning with Persija
Bambang helped Persija Jakarta win the Liga Indonesia in 2001. He was also named the best player of that season. Persija almost won the championship again in 2004, missing it by just one point. The next season, in 2005, Persija reached the final but lost to Persipura Jayapura.
Playing in Malaysia
After the 2005 season, Bambang decided to play in the Malaysian Football League for Selangor FA. His national teammate Elie Aiboy also joined him there. In his first year in Malaysia, he had a very successful season. He helped Selangor win the Premier League Malaysia, the FA Cup Malaysia, and the Malaysia Cup. He also became the league's top scorer with 23 goals in 24 matches. During his two seasons in Malaysia, he scored a total of 63 goals across different competitions.
Returning to Indonesia
In 2008, even though an English club, Derby County, was interested in him, Bambang chose to stay in Indonesia. In 2010, he had a trial with FC Ingolstadt 04 but did not get a contract. On December 9, 2013, he signed a one-year contract with Pelita Bandung Raya.
On December 3, 2014, Bambang returned to Persija Jakarta. He played for them until December 17, 2019, when he announced his retirement from professional football after 19 years. His very last match was a 3–1 win for Persija against Kalteng Putra F.C.
Becoming a Manager
Just one month after he retired, on January 17, 2020, Bambang was chosen to become the manager for Persija Jakarta.
Playing for Indonesia
Bambang's international career started in 1998 when he was picked for the Indonesian Under-19 team. He scored seven goals at the Asian Cup, making him the top scorer of that competition. He played his first game for the senior national team the next year in a friendly match against Lithuania, where he scored one goal.
Major Tournaments
Bambang played in four FIFA World Cup qualification campaigns (2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014). He played 14 matches and scored 3 goals in these qualifiers. He also took part in three AFC Asian Cup tournaments: 2000, 2004, and 2007. In the 2007 AFC Asian Cup, he scored a goal against Bahrain in a match Indonesia won 2–1.
In the 2002 Tiger Cup, Bambang was the top scorer with 8 goals. However, an injury prevented him from playing in the 2004 tournament. He scored twice in the 2008 AFF Suzuki Cup, once against Myanmar and once against Cambodia. In the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup, Bambang scored two goals against Thailand, both from penalty kicks. He has scored a total of 12 goals in the ASEAN Football Championship. This makes him the 5th-highest goal scorer in the history of the tournament.

A book called Ketika Jemariku Menari (When My Fingers Dance) tells the story of Bambang's life and career. It also talks about his teammates at both club and national levels, especially during the 2010 AFF Championship. Ivan Venkov Kolev, a former manager of the Indonesian national team, said in the book that Bambang is "a rare striker in Indonesia. Commitment and professionalism are the hallmarks of these players."
