Playing for Clubs
Bambang started playing football in his hometown when he was young. His professional career began with Persija Jakarta. In his first season (1999–2000), he was the top scorer for his club with 24 goals. In 2000, he briefly played for EHC Norad in the Netherlands, but he returned to Persija after just four months. This was the only Indonesian club he ever played for in his senior career.
Bambang helped Persija Jakarta win the Liga Indonesia championship in 2001. He was also named the best player that season. In 2004, Persija almost won again, missing out by just one point. The next year, they reached the final but lost.
Later, Bambang moved to Malaysia to play for Selangor FA in 2005. He had a fantastic first season there! He helped his team win three trophies: the Premier League Malaysia, the FA Cup Malaysia, and the Malaysia Cup. He was also the league's top scorer with 23 goals. Over two seasons in Malaysia, he scored 63 goals in various competitions.
Even though some English clubs like Derby County were interested in him in 2008, Bambang chose to stay in Indonesia. In 2010, he had a tryout with a German club, FC Ingolstadt 04, but he didn't get a contract.
On 9 December 2013, he signed a one-year contract with Pelita Bandung Raya. Then, on 3 December 2014, Bambang returned to his beloved club, Persija. He played for them until 17 December 2019, when he announced his retirement from professional football after 19 years. His very last game was a 3–1 win for Persija against Kalteng Putra F.C..
Just a month after retiring, on 17 January 2020, Bambang became the manager for Persija.
Playing for Indonesia
Bambang's international journey began in 1998 when he played for the Indonesian Under-19 team. He scored seven goals in the Asian Cup, making him the top scorer of that tournament. He made his first appearance for the senior national team the next year in a friendly match against Lithuania, where he scored a goal.
Bambang played in four FIFA World Cup qualification campaigns (2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014), scoring 3 goals in 14 matches. He also took part in three AFC Asian Cup tournaments: 2000, 2004, and 2007. In the 2007 Asian Cup, he scored a goal against Bahrain, helping Indonesia win 2–1.
In the 2002 Tiger Cup, Bambang was the top scorer with 8 goals. He scored twice in the 2008 AFF Suzuki Cup and two more goals (both from penalty kicks) in the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup against Thailand. He has scored a total of 12 goals in the ASEAN Football Championship, making him one of the top goal scorers in the tournament's history.
Life Outside Football
Personal Life
Bambang Pamungkas is married to Tribuana Tungga Dewi. They have three daughters named Salsa Alicia, Jane Abel, and Syaura Abana. He is the second youngest of seven children. Interestingly, he didn't originally plan to become a footballer. He enjoys reading and cooking. He has even said that he hopes to become a teacher or a chef after his football career ends.
Helping Others
Bambang spends some of his free time doing charity work. He supports the Bambang Pamungkas Foundation, which he created to help schools in Indonesia with money and resources. He also helps raise money for charities that support children with cancer.
Public Figure
Because he is so well-known, Bambang Pamungkas has appeared in many advertisements for products like Biskuat, Ti Phone, Nike, Bodrex, and Kuku Bima.
A book called Ketika Jemariku Menari (When My Fingers Dance) tells the story of Bambang's life, his football career, and his teammates. The book also covers his time with the national team, especially during the 2010 AFF Championship. Ivan Venkov Kolev, a former manager of the Indonesian national team, wrote in the book that Bambang is "a rare striker in Indonesia. Commitment and professionalism are the hallmarks of these players."
Bambang was also chosen to be a torch bearer for the 2012 Summer Olympics flame as it passed through Calderdale on 24 June 2012.
