The Cambodia national football team is the men's team that plays football for Cambodia. They are known as the Angkor Warriors or Koupreys of Cambodia. The team is part of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF). The Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC) started the team in 1954.

History of Cambodian Football

Early Days and Big Success

Cambodia created its first national football team in 1954. Their first home game was in 1956 against Malaya. Malaya won that game 9–2.

The Khmer Republic team finished fourth at the 1972 AFC Asian Cup.

At first, Cambodia did not join big tournaments like the FIFA World Cup qualification or AFC Asian Cup qualification. This was because the country was still developing its football. However, when Cambodia became the Khmer Republic, they decided to try for the 1972 AFC Asian Cup qualification. They succeeded and qualified for the main tournament. This was a huge achievement for them.

In the 1972 tournament, playing as the Khmer Republic, Cambodia lost to Iran. They were in Group B with South Korea and Kuwait. Even after an early loss to South Korea, they made it to the semi-finals. They beat Kuwait 4–0. They lost to Iran again and then to Thailand. Cambodia finished in 4th place overall. This is still Cambodia's best result in an international tournament. After this success, Cambodia could not play in more tournaments due to difficult times in the country.

Football's Return: 1990s to 2010s

After many years of conflict, Cambodia returned to international football in 1993. Their first tournament back was the 1996 AFF Championship. Cambodia lost all four matches in this event. Even though they were the weakest team, they showed great spirit. In later tournaments, they did not do as well. However, a talented player named Hok Sochetra emerged during this time.

Cambodia also joined the 1998 FIFA World Cup qualification for the first time. They were not very successful and often finished last in their group. They also did not enter the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification. Similarly, they only played in the 2000 AFC Asian Cup qualification before withdrawing from later attempts. The team then struggled to qualify for the AFF Championship for several years.

Cambodian football started to improve after many years. This change began with South Korean coach Lee Tae-hoon. He brought new tactics and focused on developing young players. This gave new hope to the team. Many young talents, like Chan Vathanaka, who was the first Cambodian to play professional football outside Cambodia, joined the team. Fan support also grew. Even though they did not win in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying stage and missed out on some Asian Cups, they showed great spirit.

During the 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualification, Cambodia finished last in their group. They lost to Jordan and Vietnam. However, they achieved a big win against Afghanistan. Afghanistan was ranked higher than Cambodia and had beaten them twice before. Cambodia won 1–0 at home. This is seen as one of Cambodia's best performances in recent football history.

Cambodia then played in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification first round. They beat Pakistan 4–1 over two games. This allowed them to reach the second round. In this round, they were grouped with Hong Kong, Bahrain, Iraq, and Iran. On September 5, 2019, they drew 1–1 at home against Hong Kong. Five days later, they lost 1–0 to Bahrain.

Honda managing Cambodia 2019
Keisuke Honda served as Cambodia's head coach from 2018 to 2023.

In August 2020, Félix Dalmás left his coaching role. On April 7, 2021, Ryu Hirose from Japan became the new head coach. He helped the team when manager Keisuke Honda was not available. Hirose's job was to guide Cambodia through the remaining matches of the FIFA 2022 World Cup qualifiers. Cambodia suffered two big losses to Iran, 14–0 in October 2019 and 10–0 in June 2021. They only earned one point in their group.

Honda and Hirose left the national team after the 2022 AFF Championship. Dalmás was then re-appointed as head coach. In the first round of 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification, Cambodia played Pakistan again. This time, Cambodia lost 1–0 overall and did not qualify for the next round.

In 2024, FIFA invited Cambodia to the 2024 FIFA Series tournament in Jeddah. They played against Equatorial Guinea from Africa and Guyana from North America. Cambodia lost both matches, 2–0 and 4–1.

Cambodia then played in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualification play-off round against Sri Lanka in September 2024. Cambodia lost to Sri Lanka in a penalty shoot-out.

Team Uniforms

From 2010 to 2022, Cambodia's home uniform was a blue and black shirt with black shorts and blue socks. The away uniform was all white with red stripes. The company FBT made these uniforms.

On May 27, 2022, the team showed off their new uniforms. A Cambodian sportswear company called Varaman, started in February 2022, designed them. The designs use the blue and red colors from the Cambodian flag. They also feature a pattern made from pixelated images of Angkor Wat. The 2022 home shirt has a digital camouflage design in three shades of blue. The away shirt is white with faint blue and red patterns. The goalkeeper uniforms are red for home games and blue for away games. The training uniforms are blue, red, and white with a graffiti-like pattern.
