History of Cambodian Football
Early Days and Big Success
Cambodia started its first national football team in 1954, after the end of French rule. Their first home game was in 1956 against Malaya. Malaya won that game 9–2.
At first, Cambodia didn't join big tournaments like the FIFA World Cup qualification or AFC Asian Cup qualification. They were still building their football program. However, when Cambodia became the Khmer Republic, they decided to try for the 1972 AFC Asian Cup qualification. It was a huge success! They qualified on their first try.
In the 1972 tournament, playing as the Khmer Republic, Cambodia lost to Iran. They were in Group B with South Korea and Kuwait. Even though they lost to South Korea, they beat Kuwait 4–0. This win helped them reach the semi-finals. They lost to Iran again and then to Thailand, finishing in 4th place. This is still Cambodia's best achievement in an international football tournament.
After this success, Cambodia couldn't play in more tournaments for a while due to a difficult period of war.
Football Returns (1990s to 2010s)
After many years of conflict, Cambodia's football team returned to international games in 1993. Their first tournament back was the 1996 AFF Championship. Cambodia lost all four matches, but they showed great fighting spirit. In later tournaments, they didn't do as well. However, a talented player named Hok Sochetra became one of Cambodia's football stars during this time.
Cambodia also tried to qualify for the 1998 FIFA World Cup for the first time. They weren't successful and usually finished at the bottom of their group. They also didn't join the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification. For the AFC Asian Cup, they only played in the 2000 AFC Asian Cup qualification and then didn't enter for several years. The team also struggled to qualify for the AFF Championship for three tournaments in a row.

Cambodian football started to get better after many years. This change began when South Korean coach Lee Tae-hoon arrived. He brought new ways of playing and helped develop young players. This gave new hope to the team. Many young talents, like Chan Vathanaka (the first Cambodian to play professional football outside Cambodia), joined the team. Fan support also grew. Even though they didn't qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup or the AFC Challenge Cup tournaments, their spirit was high.
During the 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualification, Cambodia finished last in their group. They lost to Jordan and their neighbor Vietnam. However, they achieved a great win against Afghanistan (who were ranked higher than Cambodia at the time). This 1–0 home win is seen as Cambodia's best performance in recent football history.

Cambodia then played in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification. They beat Pakistan 4–1 over two games to reach the next round. In the second round, they drew 1–1 at home against Hong Kong but lost to Bahrain. They also had big losses to Iran.
Coaches Keisuke Honda and Ryu Hirose later left the team. Félix Dalmás became the head coach again. In the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification, Cambodia played Pakistan again but lost 1–0 overall.
In 2024, Cambodia was invited to the 2024 FIFA Series tournament in Saudi Arabia. They played against teams from Africa and North America but lost both matches. Cambodia will play Sri Lanka in September 2024 for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualification.
Team Look and Uniforms
From 2010 to 2022, the team's home uniform was a blue and black shirt with black shorts and blue socks. Their away uniform was all white with red stripes. The company FBT made these uniforms.
In May 2022, the team got new uniforms from a Khmer sportswear company called Varaman. The new designs use the blue and red colors from the Cambodian flag. They also have patterns that look like pixelated images of Angkor Wat. The home shirt has a blue digital camouflage design. The away shirt is white with faint blue and red patterns. The goalkeeper uniforms are red and blue. The training uniforms are blue, red, and white with a cool graffiti-style pattern.
