The Turkmenistan national football team (Turkmen: Türkmenistanyň milli futbol ýygyndysy) plays for Turkmenistan in men's international football games. The team is managed by the Football Federation of Turkmenistan. Their home stadium is the Kopetdag Stadium. The current head coach is Mergen Orazow. Turkmenistan is part of FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

History of Turkmenistan Football

After Turkmenistan became an independent country, its football team played its first game against Kazakhstan on June 1, 1992. Later that month, they played against another Central Asian country, Uzbekistan.

The 2000s: First Big Steps

Turkmenistan made it to the 2004 AFC Asian Cup! They won their qualification group against teams like the United Arab Emirates and Syria. In late 2003, they had a huge win, beating Afghanistan 11–0 in a World Cup qualifier. Many players scored, with Begench Kuliyev and Rejepmyrat Agabaýew each getting three goals.

Because of their success, Turkmenistan entered the top 100 in the FIFA rankings for the first time in December 2003, reaching 99th place. At the 2004 AFC Asian Cup in China, they were in a tough group with Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq. They drew one game against Saudi Arabia but were knocked out after the group stage.

The 2010s: Reaching Finals

In 2010, Ýazguly Hojageldyýew became the coach. Under him, the team reached the final of the 2010 AFC Challenge Cup in Sri Lanka. It was their first time in a major final, but they lost to North Korea after a penalty shootout.

In 2011, Turkmenistan almost qualified for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. They drew 1–1 with Indonesia at home but lost 4–3 away, so they were out. In 2012, they reached the final of the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup again, but once more, they lost to North Korea.

In 2014, the team played in the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup but did not get past the group stage. This meant they couldn't qualify for the 2015 AFC Asian Cup.

In 2015, Amangylyç Koçumow became the new coach. The team had some ups and downs in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification. They drew 1–1 with Iran and beat India and Guam. They also had a big win against Oman (2–1). Even though they didn't qualify for the World Cup, their performance gave them a chance to play in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.

Back to the AFC Asian Cup

Turkmenistan qualified for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup for the second time! They were in a group with strong teams like Japan, Uzbekistan, and Oman. In their first match, they played well against Japan, even leading for a while, but lost 3–2. They then lost to Uzbekistan (4–0) and Oman (3–1), which meant they were out of the tournament. After this, coach Ýazguly Hojageldyýew stepped down.

In March 2019, Ante Miše from Croatia became the new head coach. In 2023, Turkmenistan played in the qualifiers for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup. They won against Bangladesh but lost to Malaysia and Bahrain, so they didn't qualify this time. They also took part in the first 2023 CAFA Nations Cup.

In November 2023, they played in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, losing to Uzbekistan and drawing with Hong Kong.
