Macau national football team facts for kids
The Macau national football team (澳門足球代表隊; Selecção Macaense de Futebol) represents Macau, a special region of China, in international football matches. The team is managed by the Macau Football Association. Macau's football team has one of the lowest rankings among all FIFA member countries.
They have never qualified for the AFC Asian Cup or the EAFF East Asian Championship. However, they did play in the 2006 AFC Challenge Cup, where they had one draw and two losses.
Before 1999, Macau was a territory of Portugal. The team represented Macau in international football even after it was handed over to China in 1999. Macau can have its own sports teams because of the "one country, two systems" rule. In Macau, this team is called the "Macau team," while the China national football team is called the "national team."

Team History
Macau played in the first 2006 AFC Challenge Cup in Bangladesh. They were in a group with Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Pakistan. Macau lost all their matches in that tournament.
Later, Macau took part in the first 2016 AFC Solidarity Cup in Kuching, Malaysia. They were grouped with Laos, Mongolia, and Sri Lanka. In their first game, Macau beat Mongolia 2–1, with captain Niki Torrão scoring two goals. They then won against Laos 4–1 and drew 1–1 with Sri Lanka. This helped Macau reach the semi-finals as group leaders.
In the semi-finals, Macau played against Brunei. Leong Ka Hang scored a goal to make the score 1–1, sending the game to extra time and then penalties. Macau won the penalty shootout and reached their first international cup final. On November 15, 2016, Macau played Nepal in the final. Nepal won the cup with a goal in the 29th minute. Leong Ka Hang was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, and Niki Torrão was a top scorer with 4 goals.
During the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification, Macau won their first match against Sri Lanka 1–0. However, they did not send their team for the second match due to safety concerns after the 2019 Sri Lanka Easter bombings. Because of this, Sri Lanka was given a 3–0 victory.
After a four-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Macau played their first international match at their home stadium, Estádio Campo Desportivo, on March 26, 2023. They lost 1–0 to Singapore. On June 19, 2023, Macau traveled to Dalian, China, for a friendly match against Myanmar. Since returning to international football, Macau has mostly played against teams from Southeast Asia, like Cambodia and Brunei.
In August 2024, a new rule from FIFA meant that non-Chinese players could no longer play for the Macau team. This affected important players like captain Nicholas Torrão, Vitor Almeida, Iuri Capelo, and Filipe Duarte.
In September 2024, Macau started a new partnership with Adidas for their team kits. This ended their 10-year deal with Nike. They wore their new Adidas kits for the first time against Brunei.
Team Rivalries
Macau vs. Hong Kong
Macau has a long-standing football rivalry with Hong Kong. The teams have played against each other in the Hong Kong–Macau Interport competition since 1937.
FIFA Suspension
In 2005, FIFA temporarily stopped Macau from playing in international matches. This happened because FIFA believed the government was too involved in how the Macau Football Association was run. The ban was lifted after Macau made changes to fix the issue.
