The Northern Mariana Islands national football team plays for the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in international men's football (soccer). The team is managed by the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association. This group is part of the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) and, since 2020, a full member of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

However, the team is not a member of FIFA, the world's main football organization. This means they can't play in big global events like the FIFA World Cup. Because of this, they don't have an official FIFA ranking. The team is often seen as one of the lowest-ranked teams in the world based on Elo ratings.

The team has won only a few official matches. Their biggest success so far was winning an exhibition tournament at the Micronesian Games in 1998. They are a relatively new international team, having played their first game in 1998.

Team History

Early Games and a Break

The Northern Mariana Islands team first played in an exhibition football tournament at the 1998 Micronesia Games. This was their first time playing in an international event. The games were a bit different from normal football. They were 9-a-side, lasted only 80 minutes, and the field was smaller.

Despite this, the team did very well! They won their first two games 8–0 against Palau B and Yap. They lost 2–1 to Guam but then won big against Palau (12–1) and Pohnpei (11–2). They reached the final and beat Guam 3–0 to win the tournament. This was their first big success.

In 1999, the team played in the first Micronesian Soccer Cup. They lost their first game 7–0 to the Federated States of Micronesia. After this, the original football group in the country stopped working. The team didn't play any international games for several years.

Coming Back to the Field

A new football group, the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association (NMIFA), was started in 2005. In 2006, the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) accepted the Northern Mariana Islands as a temporary member. This helped them get money to grow football in the country. They became full members of the EAFF in 2008.

Playing for the Marianas Cup

After joining the EAFF, the team started playing in the East Asian Football Championship. Their first games were against Guam in 2007. They lost the first game 3–2, but people were impressed by their effort. The second game was tougher, and they lost 9–0. These games were also part of the first Marianas Cup, a special trophy played between the two nations.

The teams played again in 2008. Guam won again, 3–2, but the Northern Mariana Islands showed great improvement.

Joining the AFC and First Wins

In 2009, the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association became an associate member of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). This was a big step for them.

In 2010, they played Guam again in the Marianas Cup and got their first draw, 1–1. This was a good result for the team.

The team kept trying to qualify for the EAFF East Asian Cup. In 2012, they had a new coach and brought in younger players. They scored against Guam but still lost. They also lost to Macau.

In 2013, they played in the AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers for the first time. They faced strong teams like Palestine, Bangladesh, and Nepal. They lost all three matches.

A Historic First Victory

On July 23, 2014, the Northern Mariana Islands made history! They won their first-ever official international match against Macau with a score of 2–1. Nicolas Swaim and Kirk Schuler scored the goals. This was a huge moment for the team and showed how much their hard work was paying off.

After this big win, they continued to play in qualifying tournaments. In 2016, the Governor of the Northern Mariana Islands promised a new football pitch for the team.

Aiming for FIFA Membership

In December 2020, the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association became a full member of the AFC. This was another important step. In 2021, they officially applied to join FIFA. If they become a FIFA member, they will be able to play in the World Cup qualifiers.

Playing in the Pacific Games

In 2023, the Northern Mariana Islands team played in the Pacific Games for the first time. They faced teams from the Oceania Football Confederation. On November 27, 2023, they achieved another big win, beating American Samoa 4–0. This was their first victory in the Pacific Games, with Captain Jireh Yobech scoring the team's first goal in the tournament.

Home Stadium

The Northern Mariana Islands play their home matches at the Oleai Sports Complex in Saipan. This stadium is mainly used for football games and can hold 2,000 people. It has a grass field and a running track around it.

Team Look

Colors and Kits

The team's home uniform is all sky blue shirts, shorts, and socks, with a white design on the shirt. Their away uniform is the opposite: all white shirts, shorts, and socks with a sky blue design.

Kit History

The team's logo is the same as the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association. It features a Latte stone in the background. Latte stones are ancient pillars used by the Chamorro people and are a symbol of their identity. On top of the latte stone, there's a football and a two-tone wave. The wave's colors match the national flag.

Team Nickname

The team is called the "Blue Ayuyu." An Ayuyu is the local name for the Coconut crab, also known as the Robber crab, found in the Mariana Islands.
