The Guyana national football team, known as the Golden Jaguars, plays for Guyana in international football games. The Guyana Football Federation manages the team. Guyana is special because it's one of only three South American countries that are part of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) in CONCACAF. The other two are Suriname and French Guiana. Before Guyana became independent in 1966, the team was called British Guiana.

The team has played in the Caribbean Nations Cup twice, finishing fourth in 1991. They have never played in the FIFA World Cup. However, on March 23, 2019, they made history by qualifying for the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the first time!

History of the Golden Jaguars

Early Years (1905–1959)

Guyana, then known as British Guiana, played its first international football match on July 21, 1905. They lost 4-1 to Trinidad and Tobago. Their next game was almost 16 years later, on January 28, 1921, when they won 2-1 against their neighbor Suriname.

In November 1947, British Guiana played in a tournament in Trinidad and Tobago. They beat the hosts 2-1 and Jamaica 2-0. The last game played under the name British Guiana was a 2-2 draw against Trinidad and Tobago on March 2, 1959.

Guyana's Independence Era

After Guyana became independent in 1966, the team didn't play for five years. Their first games as "Guyana" were in 1971. They played against Suriname to qualify for the 1971 CONCACAF Championship. They lost both matches.

In 1976, Guyana tried to qualify for the 1978 FIFA World Cup for the first time. They won their first home game 2-0 against Suriname. But they lost the second game 3-0, so Suriname moved forward.

Success in 2006

The year 2006 was amazing for Guyana's football team. They won eleven games in a row, including five matches to qualify for the CONCACAF Gold Cup. These wins helped Guyana move up 87 spots in the FIFA World Rankings in just over a year! This meant they were among the top 12 teams in CONCACAF.

Caribbean Nations Cup 2007

At the 2006–07 Caribbean Nations Cup, Guyana played very well. They finished first in two different group stages. They ended up third in their final group, just missing out on the semi-finals because of goal difference. If they had reached the semi-finals, they would have qualified for the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

2014 World Cup Qualifiers

With coach Jamaal Shabazz back, Guyana topped their group in the qualifiers for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. They beat Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, and Bermuda. They qualified for the third round with a 2-1 home win against Trinidad and Tobago on November 11, 2011.

In the third round, they played against strong teams like Mexico, Costa Rica, and El Salvador. They finished last in their group with one point from six matches.

Changes in Guyanese Football (2013-2016)

From November 2012 to October 2014, Guyana's team didn't play any international games. Because of this, FIFA stepped in and changed the leadership of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) at the end of 2014.

In 2015 and 2016, the "Golden Jaguars" returned. FIFA set up a special committee to fix football in Guyana. They brought back Jamaal Shabazz as head coach. Many older players had retired, so the team was younger. Even with a new team, they managed a 2-2 draw with Barbados in January 2015.
