Bambino (ice-cream) facts for kids
Bambino is a special kind of ice cream that first became popular in Poland a long time ago. It's shaped like a bar and comes on a wooden stick. Many different factories made it, so the way it looked and tasted could be a little different. The name "Bambino" comes from the Italian word for "child".
Since 1968, a company called Jogo dairy cooperative, located in Łódź, has been making Bambino ice cream.
History of Bambino Ice Cream
The story of Bambino ice cream began in the early 1960s. This was after the Polish government bought special machines from Denmark. At first, you could find Bambino in several yummy flavors. These included cream, chocolate, strawberry, and coffee. Some of them even had a tasty chocolate coating!
Back then, Bambino ice cream usually came wrapped in stiff, brown paper. You would often see it sold on beaches or busy streets. Sellers would keep the ice cream cold in white boxes filled with sawdust or artificial ice. They would even use fun slogans to tell everyone how great their ice cream was! For a long time, Bambino was the only ice cream on a stick you could buy in Poland.
Today, the packaging for Bambino looks different. It's now light brown and blue, and it even has a picture of a polar bear on it.
What Was Calypso Ice Cream?
There was also a different version of Bambino called Calypso. The main difference was that Calypso didn't have a wooden stick. Sometimes, people would even eat it served between two waffles, like an ice cream sandwich!
Many factories made Calypso. One of the biggest suppliers was a place called the State Cold Store in Gdańsk, which is now known as Lodmor. The wrapper for Calypso often showed a picture of a small woman's head and the manufacturer's logo, which looked like a sea lion.
