The BancFirst Tower is a very tall office building, also known as a skyscraper, located in Oklahoma City's main business area. It's one of the most famous buildings in the city!
This building has had several names over the years. When it was first finished, it was called Liberty Tower. Later, it became Bank One Tower, then Chase Tower, and for a while, it was known as Cotter Ranch Tower or Cotter Tower.
Standing at 152.4 meters (500 feet) tall, the BancFirst Tower is the second tallest building in Oklahoma City. It's also the sixth tallest building in the entire state of Oklahoma.
History of the Tower
This 36-floor skyscraper was finished in 1971. It was built for the Liberty National Bank and Trust Company, which was one of Oklahoma City's biggest banks. In 1997, Bank One bought Liberty Bank. After that, the tower showed the Bank One logo. Today, you'll see the Chase logo on the building. This is because Chase Bank has an agreement to use the building for its signs.
A special piece of history was once located near the tower. This was the anchor from the USS Oklahoma. This battleship was sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The USS Oklahoma had the second highest number of casualties that day. The anchor was moved from near the tower to its current spot at 12th Street and Broadway.
In May 2001, all 7,437 lights inside the tower were updated. In 2004, a company called Cotter Ranch Properties bought the tower.
A fun fact about the tower happened in 2016. Tyler Toney from the famous YouTube group Dude Perfect set a Guinness World Record! He made the world's highest basketball shot from the roof of the BancFirst Tower.
