The banded antbird (Dichrozona cincta) is a small bird found in forests. It belongs to the bird family Thamnophilidae. This bird is special because it is the only species in its group, called the genus Dichrozona. You can find banded antbirds living in warm, wet lowland forests in tropical and subtropical areas.

Discovering the Banded Antbird

The banded antbird was first described by an Austrian bird expert named August von Pelzeln. He wrote about it in 1868. At that time, he gave it a long scientific name: Cyphorhinus (Microcerculus) cinctus.

Later, in 1888, an American bird expert named Robert Ridgway created the specific group, or genus, for this bird. He named this group Dichrozona. This is why the bird's full scientific name today is Dichrozona cincta.

Where Do Banded Antbirds Live?

Banded antbirds live in different parts of South America. There are three main types, or subspecies, of this bird. Each subspecies lives in a slightly different area:

  • Dichrozona cincta cincta: This type lives in eastern Colombia, southern Venezuela, and northwestern Brazil.
  • Dichrozona cincta stellata: You can find this type in eastern Ecuador and western Brazil.
  • Dichrozona cincta zononota: This subspecies lives in west-central Brazil and northern Bolivia.
