History of Bangladeshi Money
Before 1971, when Bangladesh became independent, the money used was the Pakistani Rupee. After Bangladesh gained its freedom, it created its own money. The first Bangladeshi currency was released on March 4, 1972.
The official money was named Taka. Later, the symbol "৳" was chosen for the Taka. The smallest unit of money was set as one Taka. A smaller part of a Taka is called a Paisa. This means that ৳1 is equal to 100 Paisa. In 1973, new coins were introduced. These included 5 Paisa, 10 Paisa, 25 Paisa, and 50 Paisa coins.
Coin Designs Over Time
The 50 Paisa coin had three different designs. These designs were used from its first release in 1973 until 2001. Each of these designs featured the national symbol of Bangladesh on the front side.
The national symbol shows a lotus flower floating in water. This flower is surrounded by two grains of rice. Above the flower are three jute leaves twisted together. There are also four stars, two on each side of the leaves. These four stars stand for important ideas of the Bangladesh constitution. These ideas are nationalism, secularism, socialism, and democracy.
1973 Coin Design
The first 50 Paisa coin was made in 1973. On the back of this coin, you could see the word "Bangladesh" at the top. The year the coin was made was below it. In the middle, there was a symbol of a dove, which represents peace. At the bottom, the coin's value was written in numbers and words.
1977 Coin Design Change
In 1977, the back design of the coin was changed. The dove symbol was removed. The word "Bangladesh" remained at the top. In the middle, there were pictures of a hilsa fish, a pineapple, a banana, and a chicken. The year of the coin was printed on both sides of these pictures. The coin's value was still at the bottom, just like the earlier design.
2001 Coin Design Update
The design was changed a little bit again in 2001. The main design stayed the same. However, an eight-sided (octagonal) shape was added around the outside of the coin's round circle.
