What Was the Banjo Chocolate Bar?
Banjo was a type of candy bar sold in the United Kingdom. It was first made a long time ago, then brought back with a new recipe later on.
The Original Banjo: A Wafer Treat
The very first Banjo chocolate bar was sold mainly in the Greater London area of the UK. This version was discontinued in 1954.
It was a chocolate wafer bar. This means it had thin, crispy layers of wafer. Inside, it had a chocolate filling. The whole bar was covered in smooth milk chocolate. Many people thought it was quite similar to another well-known chocolate bar, the Kit Kat.
The Reintroduced Banjo: A Twin Bar with Peanuts
Banjo made a big comeback in 1976. This time, it was very different! There was a large advertising campaign on television to announce its return.
How the New Banjo Looked and Tasted
The new Banjo was a "twin bar." This means it had two separate sticks in one wrapper, much like a Twix bar. It was similar to another chocolate bar called Drifter. However, Banjo had an extra layer of chopped peanuts. The whole bar was covered in milk chocolate.
Its Unique Packaging
The Banjo bar came in a very noticeable wrapper. It was a deep navy blue color. The name "Banjo" was written clearly in bright yellow block letters.
This new Banjo bar was also special for its packaging. It was one of the first British snack bars to have a heat-sealed wrapper. Before this, most chocolate bars in the UK had wrappers that were just folded at the back. The heat-sealed wrapper helped keep the bar fresher.
The Banjo bar was available throughout the 1980s. There was also a special version with coconut. This coconut Banjo came in a red wrapper with yellow writing.
