The Story of Twix

Twix first appeared in the United Kingdom in 1967. It came to the United States in 1976 and again in 1979. The name "Twix" comes from "twin sticks," because it usually has two bars.

For many years, Twix was known as Raider in most of Europe. This name changed in 1991 to "Twix" to match the rest of the world. Some countries, like Denmark and Finland, changed it later in 2000. Sometimes, the old Raider name has been brought back for special retro editions.

Where Twix is Made

Twix bars for North America are made in Cleveland, Tennessee, USA. This factory also makes M&M's. For other parts of the world, like Europe and Africa, Twix bars are made in Veghel, the Netherlands. Other Mars, Incorporated chocolates, like Mars bars, are also made there.

Twix Advertisements

From 1990 to 2001, the famous actor and martial arts expert Chuck Norris was the spokesperson for Twix. He appeared in many commercials and advertising campaigns.

Pick a Side Campaign

In 2012, Twix started a fun campaign called "Pick a Side." This campaign pretended there was a rivalry between the "Left Twix" and "Right Twix" bars. They even had different packaging for each side! Even though both sides are exactly the same, the campaign suggested they were made in different factories.

In 2017, Mars released packages that said "Two Left" or "Two Right." This implied that the package contained either two left Twix or two right Twix. People even voted online about which side they liked better. In one poll, 50% preferred Left Twix and 50% preferred Right Twix. Another poll in 2021 showed 64% preferred Left Twix.

The Tale of Seamus and Earl

Twix also created a fictional story about how the bar was invented. It's called "the tale of Seamus and Earl." In this story, two brothers, Seamus and Earl, worked together. They wanted to combine biscuit, caramel, and chocolate into one amazing bar.

However, as they worked, the brothers started to argue about how to make it. They disagreed on how to add the chocolate or the caramel. When they finally showed off their new Twix bar, they accidentally broke it in half. This was the last straw! The brothers decided to split their company into two factories: one for Left Twix and one for Right Twix.

Here are some of the Twix flavors you might find, especially in the United States:

  • Original Twix: This is the classic bar, first introduced in 1976. It has chocolate, caramel, and a cookie crunch.
  • Twix Salted Caramel: This version has a chocolate cookie and a delicious salted caramel center instead of the regular caramel.
  • Twix Cookies & Creme: Introduced in 1991, this bar has a chocolate cookie with cookie bits and a white creme filling instead of caramel.
  • Twix Ice Cream Bar: This is a frozen treat! It has vanilla ice cream covered in caramel, then coated in milk chocolate.
  • Twix 100 Calories: This is a smaller candy bar with a caramel-covered cookie and a chocolate coating, designed to have 100 calories.
  • Twix Cookie Dough: This variation has a yummy cookie dough center instead of the usual caramel, all covered in milk chocolate.

Other flavors have been available in different countries. For example, in Finland, you might find Twix White, which has a white chocolate coating.

Twix Products That Are No Longer Made

  • Twix Chocolate Fudge: This bar came out in 1990. It had a chocolate fudge center, a chocolate cookie, and was covered in milk chocolate.
  • Twix Peanut Butter: Introduced in 1983, this bar had a chocolate cookie filled with peanut butter instead of caramel.

Shrinkflation

Sometimes, candy bars like Twix are accused of "shrinkflation." This means that the size of the bar gets smaller over time, but the price stays the same. People notice that Twix bars have become a bit smaller than they used to be.
