About the Museum Building
A Look at Its History
The building where the museum is now located has a long and interesting past. It was once the main office for the Bank of Korea (Hangul: 한국은행 본관). Because it's so important, it was named a National Historic Site in 1981.
A famous Japanese architect named Tatsuno Kingo designed this building. He also designed other important buildings, like Tokyo Station in Japan. Construction started in November 1907.
The building was finished in January 1912. At first, it was the headquarters for the Bank of Chōsen. This was the central bank of Korea when Japan ruled the country.
After Korea became free from Japanese rule, the Bank of Chōsen closed. The Bank of Korea was then created on June 12, 1950. The building kept its role as the main office for this new bank.
During the Korean War, the building was badly damaged by air raids. But it was repaired between 1956 and 1958.
The building continued to be the main office for the Bank of Korea until 1987. That's when the bank moved its operations to a new building nearby.
From 1987 to 1989, the outside of the old building was fixed up. Its original look was brought back. The inside was changed a bit, with marble replacing some older materials.
The last Bank of Korea office left the building in December 2000. Then, on June 13, 2001, it opened as the Bank of Korea Money Museum.
How the Building Looks
The museum building has a unique design from the early 1900s. It mixes different styles, like a French chateau and French Renaissance architecture. It's designed to be balanced and centered.
The building is mostly made of concrete and steel. But its outer walls are completely covered in granite. This granite came from outside the Heunginjimun Gate in Seoul.
The main entrance sticks out quite a bit. It has four large columns that support it. Three of the building's corners have towers with domes and decorative tops.
The bottom part of the building's outside walls has horizontal lines. These are made from granite blocks that stick out. The top part has detailed decorations, a dark border, and railings. There are also flat columns called Pilasters, each with a carved granite shield.
