Early Bank Robberies in the U.S.
The first bank robbery in the United States is thought to have happened in March 1831. This was reported by newspapers like The New York Times and Saturday Evening Post.
A famous early bank robbery happened on February 13, 1866. A group of men, believed to be connected to the famous outlaw Jesse James, robbed the Clay County Savings Association in Liberty, Missouri. Sadly, during this robbery, a young person was hurt. The robbers got away with a lot of money, over $60,000. This was Jesse James' first bank robbery. It might have been the first successful bank robbery in the U.S. during a time of peace.
Who Robs Banks?
Most bank robberies are carried out by men. However, some women have also been involved in bank robberies. Famous examples include Bonnie Parker, Patty Hearst, and a group known as the Barbie Bandits.
