The `Banksia 'Waite Crimson'` is a special type of Banksia plant. It is a chosen form of the Banksia coccinea, also known as the Albany or Scarlet Banksia. This particular variety is known for flowering later in the year than other Banksia coccinea plants.

What is 'Banksia' 'Waite Crimson'?

'Banksia' 'Waite Crimson' is a unique plant variety. It was specifically developed from the well-known Banksia coccinea. Think of it like a special edition of a plant. It shares many features with its parent plant but has some cool differences.

How was it created?

This special Banksia was created in 1989. It started from a seed of a Banksia coccinea plant. This happened at Blewitt Springs in South Australia. A scientist named Dr Margaret Sedgley led this work. She was part of the Department of Horticulture, Viticulture and Oenology. This department is at the Waite Agricultural Research Institute, which is part of the University of Adelaide in Adelaide.

The plant was officially recognized as a new variety in 1992. This recognition was given by a company called Luminis Pty Ltd. This company belongs to the University of Adelaide.

What makes it special?

The 'Waite Crimson' Banksia stands out because of its flowering time. It blooms later in the year compared to other Banksia coccinea plants. While most Banksia coccinea flower from July to December, the 'Waite Crimson' flowers from September to December. Its busiest flowering time is in October.

Another special feature is its flower head, called an inflorescence. It is a bit shorter and wider than the flower heads of other Banksia coccinea plants.
