Banksia dallanneyi subsp. media is a special type of plant, a subspecies of Banksia dallanneyi. For a long time, it was known by a different name: Dryandra lindleyana subsp. media.
What's in a Name?
In 2007, two scientists named Austin Mast and Kevin Thiele made a big change in how plants were classified. They decided that all plants in the Dryandra group should actually be part of the Banksia group.
Why the Name Change?
When Dryandra plants became Banksia plants, there was a problem. There was already a Banksia plant called Banksia lindleyana. To avoid confusion, Mast and Thiele had to pick a brand new name for Dryandra lindleyana. That's why this plant is now called Banksia dallanneyi subsp. media.
Where Does It Live?
Like other plants in the Banksia ser. Dryandra group, this subspecies is endemic to a specific place. This means it only grows naturally in the South West Botanical Province of Western Australia. It's a special part of the plant life found there!
