Banksia dallanneyi subsp. pollosta is a special type of plant. It is a subspecies of Banksia dallanneyi. Think of a subspecies as a unique group within a species. It has small differences from other plants in the same species.
A Name Change Story
This plant used to have a different name. Before 2007, it was known as Dryandra lindleyana subsp. pollosta.
Why the Name Changed
In 2007, two scientists, Austin Mast and Kevin Thiele, made an important discovery. They found that all plants in the Dryandra group were actually very similar to Banksia plants. Because of this, they decided to combine Dryandra into the Banksia group.
This meant that Dryandra lindleyana needed a new name. There was already a Banksia plant called Banksia lindleyana. To avoid confusion, Mast and Thiele chose a new name for Dryandra lindleyana. This new name became Banksia dallanneyi. So, our plant became Banksia dallanneyi subsp. pollosta.
Where It Lives
Like other plants in the Banksia ser. Dryandra group, this plant is endemic to Western Australia. "Endemic" means it is found only in that specific area. It grows naturally in the South West Botanical Province. This is a special region in Western Australia known for its unique plants.
