Banksia prolata subsp. calcicola is a special kind of plant. It's a subspecies, which means it's a smaller group within a larger plant species called Banksia prolata. This plant is part of the big Banksia family, famous for its unique flowers.

What is Banksia prolata subsp. calcicola?

This plant was once known by a different name: Dryandra longifolia subsp. calcicola. But in 2007, two scientists, Austin Mast and Kevin Thiele, made an important change. They decided that all plants in the group called Dryandra should actually be part of the Banksia group.

Why did its name change?

When the scientists moved Dryandra plants into the Banksia group, they faced a problem. The name Banksia longifolia was already being used for a different plant. So, Mast and Thiele had to pick a new scientific name for D. longifolia. This new name became Banksia prolata, and so this subspecies also got its new name, Banksia prolata subsp. calcicola.

Where does it grow?

Like other plants in the Banksia ser. Dryandra group, Banksia prolata subsp. calcicola is found only in one special place. It grows in the South West Botanical Province of Western Australia. This area is known for having many unique plants that don't grow anywhere else in the world.
