Public Service and Education
Early Career in Lawrence
Before joining the Kansas House, Barbara Ballard was active in her local community. From 1985 to 1993, she served on the Lawrence School Board. This board helps make important decisions for schools in the Lawrence area.
Education and Academic Roles
Barbara Ballard has a strong educational background. She earned her first degree, a bachelor's degree, from Webster College in 1967. Later, she continued her studies at Kansas State University. She received a Master of Science degree in 1976. Then, she earned her doctorate degree in 1980.
After her studies, she worked as an elementary school teacher. From 1980 to 2004, she held important roles at the University of Kansas. She was the dean of students, helping many university students. She also directed the Emily Taylor Women's Resource Center. This center supports women at the university.
Current Role and Leadership
Today, Barbara Ballard is the senior associate director at the Dole Institute of Politics. This institute focuses on politics and public service. She is also the chairwoman of the House Democratic Caucus. This means she leads the Democratic members in the Kansas House. She is also the treasurer for the Kansas African American Legislative Caucus. This group works on issues important to African American communities in Kansas.
