Barbara Stühlmeyer (born November 12, 1964) is a German expert in theology and music. She is also a writer, especially known for her work on the music of Hildegard of Bingen, a famous composer from the Middle Ages. She also works as a science journalist, which means she writes about scientific topics for the public.

About Barbara Stühlmeyer

Barbara Stühlmeyer was born in Bremen, Germany. She studied organ music and helped at the Catholic church of St. John's in Bremen. Later, she studied Christian music at the University of the Arts Bremen.

From 1988 to 1994, she continued her studies at the University of Münster. There, she learned about Catholic theology, philosophy, and musicology (the study of music). In 2004, she earned her PhD in philosophy with top honors. She also studied Gregorian semiology, which is about understanding old church music.

Her Work on Hildegard of Bingen

Barbara Stühlmeyer's main research was about the songs of Hildegard of Bingen. Hildegard was a German abbess, writer, composer, and philosopher from the 12th century. Barbara's research showed that Hildegard's musical notes, called "neumes," had a special rhythm. Before this, people thought Hildegard's music was either all the same speed or had a fixed rhythm.

Barbara proved that Hildegard's music was very professional for her time. She showed that Hildegard's songs were likely used in church services. Her work also explored how Hildegard's play, Ordo virtutum, reflected important ideas about right and wrong from the 12th century. Barbara also wrote about Hildegard's music for an online project about music and gender.

Other Work and Life

From 1993 to 2001, Barbara Stühlmeyer led conferences at the Catholic academy St.-Jabobus-Haus in Goslar. Since 1995, she has been a writer and editor for the magazine Karfunkel. She writes about music and medieval times for them. She has also worked as a freelance writer for other magazines since 2005.

From 2010 to 2015, she was an editor for the scientific music magazine Musica sacra. Barbara also helps with making music CDs. She advises groups like Sequentia and Ars Choralis Coeln on old music. She is also an expert on the Middle Ages for radio, TV, and international exhibitions. She has contributed to many books.

Barbara Stühlmeyer lives in Hof in Bavaria. She is married to Ludger Stühlmeyer, who is a church musician and composer. They have a daughter named Lea Stühlmeyer. Since 2002, Barbara has been an oblate of the Benedictine abbey St. Hildegard's. This means she is a lay person connected to the monastery.
