History of Barberville
Barberville has a short but interesting history. It was never a very big place. For example, in 1880, only 49 people lived there. By 1902, that number was 34.
The village began in 1829. A man named Joseph T. Barber built a dam and a sawmill there. This mill was important for the area. Sadly, the mill was destroyed in a fire in 1869. Barberville was also home to one of the first school districts in Hopkinton.
Barberville Today
Today, Barberville is a quiet place. The main road that goes through the village is Arcadia Road. The Wood River flows through Barberville. This river also marks the border between Hopkinton and Richmond.
The Wood-Pawcatuck Watershed Association has its main office in Barberville. This group works to protect the local rivers and land.
