Barbie in A Christmas Carol is a fun computer-animated Christmas movie from 2008. It was directed by William Lau and made by Mattel Entertainment and Rainmaker Entertainment. This film is the fourteenth movie in the popular Barbie film series.
The story is based on a classic book called A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. In this version, Barbie voices the main character, Eden Starling. Eden is a famous singer who doesn't like Christmas very much. The movie teaches important lessons about kindness and the joy of giving. It's a heartwarming story for the holiday season!
What the Story is About
Barbie tells this story to her younger sister, Kelly. Kelly doesn't want to go to a Christmas Eve party. She would rather stay home with her family.
The story is about Eden Starling, a very famous singer and owner of a theater in Victorian London. Eden is quite proud and only thinks about herself. She really dislikes Christmas. She always has her snooty cat, Chuzzlewit, with her.
Eden tells her theater workers, like Freddy the magician and Catherine, the costume designer, that they must work on Christmas Day. This ruins everyone's holiday plans. Catherine, who is Eden's childhood friend, tries to change her mind, but Eden won't listen.
That night, Eden gets a visit from the ghost of her Aunt Marie. Aunt Marie was also very selfish when she was alive. She warns Eden that she is becoming just like her. Aunt Marie says three special spirits will visit Eden to help her change.
First, the happy Spirit of Christmas Past takes Eden back to her childhood. When Eden was a little girl, her Aunt Marie made her study music all the time. She had very little fun. Young Eden secretly sneaks out to celebrate Christmas with Catherine and her family. But Aunt Marie finds out and gets very angry. After this, Eden was not allowed to celebrate Christmas anymore. Aunt Marie also taught Eden to be selfish.
Next, the cheerful Spirit of Christmas Present visits Eden. This spirit shows Eden what her theater workers really think of her. They are not happy with her. The spirit then shows Eden that Catherine visits a local orphanage. Catherine is very kind and gives clothes to the children there. She is especially close to a child named Tammy, who has a disability. Eden feels sad when she sees this. She also learns that the orphanage might close because it doesn't have enough money.
Finally, a quiet and kind Spirit of Christmas Future appears. Eden is shocked to see her future self living in poverty. The spirit explains that Eden had fired her workers, including Catherine. This happened after they were late one Christmas. After that, the new performers Eden hired were not popular. Eden lost all her fame and money.
Eden visits Catherine, who is now a successful fashion designer. Catherine explains that after Eden fired her, she left the country to find work. When she came back, she was doing well and wanted to adopt Tammy. But she found the orphanage closed and the children gone. Catherine has become sad about Christmas and now only cares about her career. She even treats her own workers badly, just like Eden used to. Catherine refuses to help the poor Eden and makes her leave her shop.
Eden is very scared and asks the spirits for another chance to change. She wakes up back in her bed on Christmas morning. She feels full of joy! Eden goes to the theater and gives gifts to all her employees. She also tells them they can have the holiday off. This makes everyone happy and changes how they see her.
Eden asks Catherine to take her to the orphanage. Eden promises to help the orphanage with money. Freddy arrives with a carriage. The spirits magically turn it into a sleigh! Catherine, Eden, and Freddy ride off to spend Christmas with Catherine’s family. The children at the orphanage wave goodbye. Even the ghost of Aunt Marie is there, unseen, finally free from her chains.
After hearing the story, Kelly feels much more generous. Barbie's friend Nikki comes in to say they are late. Barbie and Kelly then leave for the Christmas party.
