Scientific classification

The chubbyhead barb (Enteromius anoplus) is a type of ray-finned fish that lives in fresh water. You can find this fish all over South Africa in many different watery places. It's special because it has two breeding seasons each year. This helps it survive and thrive, even though it doesn't live very long.

What Does a Chubbyhead Barb Look Like?

Female chubbyhead barbs are a bit bigger than males. Females can grow up to 120 mm (4.7 in) long, while males reach about 100 mm (3.9 in).

They have a rounded head and a small mouth. You might notice a few small "beards" or whiskers near their mouth. These help them find food.

Most of the time, these fish are a greyish-green color on their back. They also have a small spot on their tail fin. During the breeding season, male chubbyhead barbs become brightly golden colored. This makes them stand out!

Where Do Chubbyhead Barbs Live?

The chubbyhead barb is found in many rivers across South Africa. You can spot them from the Highveld down to KwaZulu-Natal. They also live in the former Transkei region.

You'll find them in the middle and upper parts of the Orange River. They also swim in the larger rivers of the Western and Eastern Cape areas. This means they are quite widespread!

Chubbyhead Barb Homes and Habits

Chubbyhead barbs like to live in cooler water. They can be found in many different watery homes. These include large lakes and rivers, as well as small streams.

They often stay in darker waters where there are shadows. For example, you might find them hiding under fallen trees.

How Chubbyhead Barbs Have Babies

These fish are unique because they breed twice a year! The first breeding season is from November to January. The second one happens from February to March. Scientists believe having two breeding seasons helps Enteromius anoplus be so successful. It allows them to live in many different environments across South Africa.

The female fish lays her eggs on plants in the water. The tiny larvae hatch from the eggs in about three days. After 6 to 7 days, the young fish start swimming and finding their own food. They become adults and can have their own babies after one year.

Most male chubbyhead barbs live for about two years. Females can live a bit longer, up to three years old.

What Do Chubbyhead Barbs Eat?

Chubbyhead barbs are omnivorous. This means they eat both plants and animals. Their diet includes insects and tiny water creatures called zoo plankton. They also munch on green algae and tiny plant-like organisms called diatoms.

Just like other animals, chubbyhead barbs are also food for other creatures. Larger fish and birds often hunt and eat them.
