Bardley, Missouri facts for kids
Bardley is a small, quiet place in the U.S. state of Missouri. It's not a city or town with its own government, but rather an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and buildings without a formal city council. Bardley is special because it sits right on the border between two counties: Oregon County and Ripley County. You can find it about two miles north of U.S. Route 160 and fourteen miles east of a town called Alton.
The Story of Bardley
Bardley began its life in 1895. Back then, it was a busy place focused on logging, which means cutting down trees for wood. The community got its name from a place called Bordley, Kentucky. This was the hometown of one of the very first people to settle in Bardley. Interestingly, the spelling of "Bardley" is a bit different from "Bordley." This happened because of a mistake made by the postal service, and the spelling was never changed!
A post office was opened in Bardley in 1895, helping people send and receive mail. This post office served the community for many years, finally closing its doors in 1966.
