Bardu Ali (born September 23, 1906 – died October 29, 1981) was an American musician. He was a talented jazz and R&B singer, guitarist, and music promoter. He helped many other artists get their start in music.
The Life of Bardu Ali
Bardu Ali was born in the United States on September 23, 1906. As a young man, he became interested in the world of entertainment. He even worked with early Black cinema in the late 1920s and 1930s.
Starting in New York
In the 1920s, Bardu Ali moved to New York City. There, he became the leader of a band called the Napoleon Zyas band. He was also a master of ceremonies, which means he hosted shows for his band and for other bands, like those led by Leroy Tibbs and Chick Webb.
Bardu Ali is famous for helping a very well-known singer, Ella Fitzgerald. He convinced Chick Webb to hire her, which was a big step in her amazing career.
Touring and Moving West
Bardu Ali also traveled to England. He went on tour with a popular show called Blackbirds. After returning to the U.S., he took over as bandleader for Chick Webb's band in 1935, after Webb passed away.
In 1940, Bardu Ali moved to California. There, he became a business partner with another famous musician, Johnny Otis. Ali sang in Otis's band and together they opened a music club called The Barrelhouse in 1947.
Bardu Ali played a big part in the early careers of other artists too. He helped Charles Brown become famous. He was also the business manager for the well-known comedian and actor Redd Foxx.
