The Story of Barium Springs
How Barium Springs Got Its Name
Long ago, Native Americans called this area Poison Springs. This was also the name of the first post office here. In the 1880s, a special mineral spa opened in the community. People believed the water from the springs had healing powers. The water contained minerals like barium. Because of these special waters, the community changed its name to Barium Springs. This new name highlighted the helpful minerals found there.
