Discover the Barnes-Frost House
The Barnes-Frost House stands on the west side of Marion Avenue. It is north of where Marion Avenue meets Old Mountain Road. This road is also known as Connecticut Route 322.
What Does the House Look Like?
The house is two-and-a-half stories tall. It is made of wood and has a classic design. The outside is covered with clapboard, which are overlapping wooden boards. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides, called a side gable roof.
There is a large chimney right in the middle of the house. The front of the house has five windows and a door. The main entrance is in the center. It has decorative columns, called pilasters, on each side. Above the door is a flat band with cool oval shapes. You can see these same oval shapes above the windows and under the roof line.
A Special Chimney
The big chimney in the middle of the house is very old. But it wasn't always part of this house! It was moved here from another house in Cheshire, Connecticut. This chimney is from the 1700s, just like the house itself. Inside the house, you can still find some original parts. For example, the wide pine floors are still there from when the house was first built.
Why is This House Important?
The Barnes-Frost House was built around 1796. It is important for a few reasons. First, it is a very well-kept example of Colonial architecture. This style was popular when America was first becoming a country.
Second, the house was home to two very important local families: the Barnes family and the Frost family.
The Barnes Family Home
Philo Barnes bought the house in 1810. His father, Asa Barnes, was a well-known tavern owner in the area. Philo himself owned a lot of land. Three generations of the Barnes family lived in this house.
The Frost Family Takes Over
In 1881, Levi Frost bought the house. His family was also very important in the area. They owned a local factory. The house stayed in the Frost family until 1916.
