This historic castle is now mostly in ruins. It's a Tower House, which means it was a tall, strong building used for defense and living in. The castle is no longer a home. Instead, a large, beautiful Georgian mansion was built nearby. This mansion is where the local landowners, the Joyce family, live today. The old castle ruins are even used as a shelter for cattle!

A Tower House is a type of castle that was popular in Ireland many years ago. They were usually tall, rectangular stone buildings with thick walls. They were built to protect families and their belongings.

Barntown Village and Local History

Close to the castle is Barntown village. This village has a Roman Catholic church designed by the famous architect Pugin. There is also a national school in the village.

General Clooney and the 1798 Rising

On the hills south of Barntown Castle, you can find a monument. This monument honors General Clooney. He was a famous person who played an important part in the 1798 Rising. During this historical event, he even captured a British warship near Duncannon! General Clooney is buried in a place called St. Mullins.
