Baron Panmure facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Baron Panmure, of Brechin and Navar in the County of Forfar, was a special title given to important people in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. A "peerage" is a system of titles for nobles, like dukes, marquesses, earls, viscounts, and barons. This title was created on 10 September 1831 for the Honourable William Maule. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Forfar for a long time.

When William Maule passed away in 1852, his oldest son, Fox Maule-Ramsay, became the next Baron Panmure. However, the title ended when Fox Maule-Ramsay died in 1874 because he had no children to pass it on to.

How the Panmure Title Began

The title of Baron Panmure was brought back for William Maule in 1831. He was born William Ramsay, the second son of George Ramsay, who was the 8th Earl of Dalhousie.

William Maule's family had a connection to the Maule family through his great-aunt, Jean. In 1782, William Maule inherited the Maule family's lands and properties after his great-uncle, William Maule, 1st Earl Panmure, died. To show this connection, William Maule was given special permission by the King (called a royal licence) to add "Maule" to his surname. This is how he became William Maule.

The original Panmure title (Earl of Panmure) had been lost earlier because one of the family members, James Maule, 4th Earl of Panmure, took part in a rebellion in 1715. His titles were taken away in 1716. But in 1831, the Panmure name was revived when William Maule was made a Baron.

The Second Baron Panmure

After William Maule, his oldest son, Fox Maule-Ramsay, became the second Baron Panmure. He was an important politician for the Liberal Party. In 1860, he also inherited another important title, becoming the eleventh Earl of Dalhousie. At this time, he added "Ramsay" to his surname, becoming Fox Maule-Ramsay.

Since Fox Maule-Ramsay did not have any children, the title of Baron Panmure ended when he died in 1874. The Earldom of Dalhousie, however, continued through his cousin and is still an active title today.

Other Family Members

The Honourable Lauderdale Maule, who was the second son of the first Baron Panmure, also served as a Member of Parliament for Forfar in the House of Commons.
