Early Life and Start of Career
Fox Maule was born at Brechin Castle on April 22, 1801. He went to school at the Charterhouse School in London. In 1819, he joined the army as an ensign in the 79th Regiment of Cameron Highlanders.
He spent several years in Canada, working for his uncle, the Earl of Dalhousie. By 1831, he had become a captain. He then left the army and married the Honourable Montagu, who was the daughter of the second Lord Abercromby. They lived at Dalguise House, near Dunkeld, for twenty years.
Fox Maule first got involved in politics by helping his friend, the Marquis of Breadalbane, in an election. He later said this was when he "was politically born." In 1834, he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Perthshire. After losing that seat, he was elected for the Elgin Burghs. He then resigned from that seat and was elected by the city of Perth, representing them for ten years. He later moved to the House of Lords after his father passed away.
Important Political Roles
In 1835, Fox Maule became an MP in the British House of Commons. He served as an Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department from 1835 to 1841. Later, from 1846 to 1852, he was the Secretary at War. For a few weeks in 1852, he was also the President of the Board of Control.
In April 1852, he became the 2nd Baron Panmure after his father's death. In February 1855, he joined Lord Palmerston's government. He took on the new role of Secretary of State for War. Lord Panmure held this position until February 1858. He was in charge of the War Office during the end of the Crimean War. He also served as the Keeper of the Privy Seal of Scotland from 1853 until he died.
Lord Dalhousie was very interested in church matters. He strongly supported the Free Church of Scotland. This church formed after a big split from the Church of Scotland in 1843. In December 1860, he became the 11th Earl of Dalhousie, inheriting the title from his relative. Soon after, he changed his last name to "Maule-Ramsay."
Later Life and Legacy
Fox Maule-Ramsay passed away on July 6, 1874, at Brechin Castle. He died in the very same room where he had been born 73 years earlier.
Support for the Free Church
For thirty years, he was chosen to represent the Free Presbytery of Dunkeld at the General Assembly. He played a very active role in their meetings. After the Disruption of the church, many landowners refused to provide land for new churches and homes for ministers. It was mainly because of his speeches in Parliament that this problem was solved. He even laid the first stone for the new Free Church in Dunkeld.
Involvement in Freemasonry
Maule was an important member of the United Grand Lodge of England. He was appointed Senior Grand Warden in 1832. Later, as Lord Panmure, he became Deputy Grand Master in 1857. In 1867, he was chosen as the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Scotland. A lodge called Panmure Lodge (now No. 723) was named after him in 1860.
Family Life
Lord Dalhousie married the Honourable Montague, daughter of George Abercromby, in 1831. They did not have any children. She passed away in November 1853 at the age of 46. Lord Dalhousie died in July 1874, aged 73. When he died, his title of Baron Panmure ended because he had no children. However, the title of Earl of Dalhousie passed to his cousin, George Ramsay.
