William Ramsay Maule, 1st Baron Panmure (born October 27, 1771 – died April 13, 1852) was an important Scottish landowner and politician. He was known for his work in Parliament and for his family's estates in Scotland.
Early Life and Family Name
William Ramsay Maule was born William Ramsay. His father was George Ramsay, 8th Earl of Dalhousie. His mother was Elizabeth Glen. William's grandmother, Jean Maule, was connected to the Maule family, who were Earls of Panmure.
When his great-uncle, George Maule, passed away in 1782, William inherited the Maule family estates. To follow the wishes in the will, he officially added the surname Maule to his name that same year. This meant he became William Ramsay Maule.
A Career in Politics
William Ramsay Maule attended the High School in Edinburgh from 1780 to 1784. He was a classmate of the famous writer Walter Scott.
After inheriting the estates, William became involved in politics. He represented the area of Forfarshire in the British Parliament. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1796, and then again from 1805 until 1831.
In 1831, during the coronation of William IV of the United Kingdom, William Ramsay Maule was given a special honor. He was made a "peer," which meant he became a Baron. His new title was Baron Panmure, of Brechin and Navar. This title was similar to the one held by his great-uncle, the Earl Panmure.
Life at Brechin Castle
For many years, William lived at Brechin Castle, which was the family's main home. He made changes to the castle, updating it in the popular Georgian style of the time.
Baron Panmure was also a supporter of artists. He commissioned several paintings from an artist named Thomas Musgrave Joy. He even helped pay for Joy to take on a student, showing his dedication to the arts.
William Ramsay Maule, 1st Baron Panmure, was buried in the churchyard of Brechin Cathedral. A large stone monument marks his grave there.
His Family
Lord Panmure married Patricia Heron Gordon on December 1, 1794. They had nine children together. Some of their children included:
- Fox Maule Ramsay (1801–1874), who later became the 2nd Baron Panmure.
- Hon. Lauderdale Maule (1807–1854).
After Patricia passed away in 1821, William married Elizabeth Barton on June 4, 1822. Through this marriage, he gained control of the estates in Barnton, Edinburgh. He then rebuilt the main house, Barton House, with a design by the architect David Hamilton.
