Lauderdale Maule (born March 27, 1807 – died August 1, 1854) was a Scottish soldier and an important public figure. He was the second son of a powerful Scottish noble, Lord Panmure. Lauderdale Maule served his country in the military and later as a politician, even during a major war.

Early Life and Military Career

Lauderdale Maule was born at Brechin Castle in Scotland. He began his military career at a young age. In 1825, when he was just 18, he joined the 39th Regiment of Foot as an ensign. An ensign was a junior officer rank, similar to a second lieutenant today.

He steadily rose through the ranks. By 1835, he became a captain in the 95th (Derbyshire) Regiment of Foot. Soon after, he moved to the 79th Regiment of Foot. He continued to be promoted, becoming a major in 1840 and then a lieutenant-colonel in 1842. As a lieutenant-colonel, he took command of the 79th Regiment.

A Life of Service

Beyond his military duties, Lauderdale Maule also served in government. In 1850, he was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for Forfarshire. This was an important local role, helping the Lord-Lieutenant with civic and military duties.

From 1852 to 1854, he was a Member of Parliament (MP) for his home area. This meant he helped make laws for the country. Even though he retired from the Army in 1852, he was given another important job. In 1853, he became the Surveyor-General of the Ordnance. This role involved managing military supplies and equipment.

During the Crimean War, a big conflict involving several European powers, Lauderdale Maule was working in Varna, Bulgaria. Sadly, while carrying out his duties there, he became very ill with cholera. Cholera is a serious disease that can spread quickly. He died from the illness in a military hospital in Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul) on August 1, 1854.

His Legacy

Lauderdale Maule's parents lived in Edinburgh, so he likely spent time there when he was on leave from the army.

Today, he is remembered in several places. There is a special memorial to him in Panbride Church, located on the east coast of Scotland. A very large monument dedicated to Lauderdale Maule and the 79th Regiment stands proudly in the middle of Dean Cemetery in Edinburgh.
