Barranca is a vibrant city located on the coast of Peru. It serves as the capital of the Barranca Province, which is part of the Lima Region.
Barranca started out as a small port settlement. Local fishermen supplied fish from here, much like the larger port of Callao. The city really grew into what it is today during a period in Peru's history called the Republican era. This growth happened mainly from the late 1890s to the 1930s.

Exploring Barranca's Past
How Barranca Began
Barranca's story began with a small group of fishermen. They settled here to be close to the ocean and its resources. Their hard work helped feed people in the area and even supplied other larger ports.
Growing into a City
The biggest changes for Barranca happened during Peru's Republican era. This was a time when the country was building itself after gaining independence. Between the late 1800s and the 1930s, Barranca transformed from a small fishing village into a more developed city.
Amazing Discoveries in Barranca
Uncovering Ancient Secrets
In March 2023, something very exciting was found near Barranca! Archaeologists from the Jagiellonian University and the National University of San Marcos made an important discovery. They found a very old temple, built long before Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas. This temple was made of dried bricks.
What Was Found Inside?
Inside the temple, archaeologists found human burials. One of the most interesting finds was a skull from a male individual. This skull was carefully placed inside a very long cloth, about 3 meters (nearly 10 feet) long! The cloth itself was special because it was decorated with pictures of animals. These discoveries help us learn more about the people who lived in this area a very long time ago.
