Barranca de Otates, also known as Barranca de los Otates, is a small town in Mexico. It is part of the Zacoalco de Torres area in the state of Jalisco. In 2020, about 1,001 people lived there.

History of Barranca de Otates
Long ago, this town was full of a plant called otates. This plant is also known as Mexican weeping bamboo. It grew all over the canyon near the river.
People used otates to make strong baskets of different sizes. They also sometimes made walking sticks from the plant's roots. These walking sticks could look like animals with horns or ears.
Natural Beauty and Terrain
Barranca de Otates has many beautiful natural sights. The town is built around a stream that flows mostly during the rainy season. This season lasts from June to September.
Rock Formations and Waterfalls
Up the canyon, you can find a place called Las Peñas. This means "The Boulders" in Spanish. There are amazing rock formations on both sides of the stream. These rocks look like granite.
At the very top of the stream, there is an enclosed canyon called El Cajón. Here, you can see a waterfall that is over 7 meters (about 23 feet) high! This special spot is surrounded by three mountains.
Local Life and Farming
Many people in Barranca de Otates own horses. Most residents are considered middle-class. People in and around the town own land where they grow crops.

The town is located in the southern part of Jalisco, Mexico. It is about one hour south of a larger city called Guadalajara.
