Where is Barredos?

Barredos is located in a convenient spot in Asturias. It is only 2 kilometers (about 1.2 miles) away from Pola de Laviana, which is the main town of the district. The bigger cities of Oviedo and Gijón are also nearby. Oviedo is about 31 kilometers (19 miles) away, and Gijón is about 38 kilometers (24 miles) from Barredos.

A Look at Barredos' History

Barredos started as a mining town. It grew because of the large amount of coal found in the Nalón Mining Basin. In the 1950s, the town expanded a lot. This was when the "First of May" neighborhood was built. Many workers from the Carrio coal mine lived in this new area.

In the center of this neighborhood, a special church was built. It is called the San José Obrero church. Its tall bell tower stands out above all the other buildings. The main street, called Avenida del Principado, divides Barredos into two parts. One side has the church and the newer neighborhood. The other side is the older part of town.

The Tiraña river, which flows into the Nalón River, also runs through Barredos. You can still find old mining paths in the area. These paths were once used for coal mining. Near one of these paths is the Rimoria suspension bridge. This bridge was built by a company called Duro Felguera. It looks a bit like the famous Vizcaya Bridge, but it is much smaller.
