The Barrier Ranges are a group of hills and higher lands in the far western part of New South Wales, Australia. They are also sometimes called the Barrier Range or historically Stanley's Barrier Range. These ranges surround the city of Broken Hill.

Exploring the Barrier Ranges

The Barrier Ranges are a whole system of hills and ridges. This system includes the Main Barrier Range. It also features other smaller ranges. These include the Coko Range, Floods Range, and Slate Range. You can also find the Robe Range, Mundi Mundi Range, and Coonbaralba Range here. The Mount Darling Range is part of this system too. The city of Broken Hill is located right within these ranges.

Where are the Barrier Ranges?

These ranges mostly run from north to south. They are located east of the border between New South Wales and South Australia. The Barrier Ranges are a bit higher than the lands around them. They sit between the lower areas along the Darling River and the lower ground in South Australia. This area is famous for its rich mineral deposits. The most well-known deposit is found in Broken Hill.

In 1856, people started setting up sheep farms here. This was a sign of growing wealth from farming. It also showed the potential for finding more minerals. This led to more people settling in the area over time.

Why is it Called the Barrier Ranges?

The name 'Barrier' is used for many things in the Broken Hill area. For example, the Barrier Highway gets its name from these ranges. Many local groups and businesses also use the word 'barrier'.

Who Named the Barrier Ranges?

The ranges were named by an explorer named Charles Sturt. He explored this area in 1844. This was during his third and final big trip. He named them "Stanley's Barrier Range". He did this to honor Lord Stanley.
