Barry Du Bois grew up in Sydney, Australia. He went to Chipping Norton Public School. Later, he attended Liverpool Boys High School. He was very good at sports during his school years.

Starting as a Builder
In 1976, Barry Du Bois began learning carpentry and joinery. He finished his building certificate in 1980. Architects helped him learn even more about design. By 1979, he started designing and building homes. He ran his own successful business for many years. He stopped working in the building business in 2005.

He met his wife, Leonie Carol Tobler, in Bondi in 1992. They got married in 1999. In 2012, they welcomed their twin children, a son and a daughter.
In 2010, Barry was diagnosed with a type of cancer called plasmacytoma. This cancer affects the immune system. He received treatment, but the cancer had damaged his spine. He had surgery to get a titanium implant in his spine. In 2017, Barry shared that his cancer had returned as multiple myeloma.
