Barry Goldberg (born December 25, 1942 – died January 22, 2025) was an American musician. He was known for playing keyboards in blues and rock music. Barry was also a talented songwriter and helped produce many albums for other artists. For example, he worked on albums for Percy Sledge and James Cotton. He even helped produce a song for Bob Dylan.

Barry Goldberg's Music Journey

Early Years and Famous Bands

Barry Goldberg grew up in Chicago, Illinois. When he was a teenager, he got to play with famous blues musicians like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. This was a great way for him to learn about the blues!

In 1965, Barry played keyboards with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. They backed up Bob Dylan at the Newport Folk Festival. This was a big moment because Dylan started playing electric music, which was new for him.

Later, in 1967, Barry started a band called The Electric Flag with his friend Mike Bloomfield. The next year, he formed another group called the Barry Goldberg Reunion.

Writing Songs and Producing Music

Barry Goldberg was not just a great player; he also wrote many songs. Some of his songs were co-written with Gerry Goffin. Many famous musicians have recorded his songs, including Rod Stewart, Gladys Knight, and Joe Cocker.

Barry also helped produce music for other artists. He worked on albums for Percy Sledge and Charlie Musselwhite. He even produced a version of Curtis Mayfield's song "People Get Ready" for Bob Dylan.

Some of the albums Barry played on include Leonard Cohen's Death of a Ladies' Man and End of the Century by The Ramones. He also played on Super Session, which featured other famous musicians like Stephen Stills.

In 1974, Barry released his own album called Barry Goldberg. It was produced by Bob Dylan and Jerry Wexler, who were both very well-known in the music world.

Later Music Projects

In the 1990s and 2000s, Barry continued to be very active in music. In 1994, he helped produce an album for Percy Sledge called Blue Night. This album was nominated for a Grammy Award!

Barry also wrote the theme song for the Disney Channel movie Smart House in 1999. The song was called "The House is Jumpin'".

In 2005 and 2006, Barry toured with a group called the Chicago Blues Reunion. Their first CD was very popular and got a great review from Rolling Stone magazine.

The Rides and Other Collaborations

In 2012, Stephen Stills (from Crosby, Stills & Nash) asked Barry to form a new band called the Rides. They also brought in guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd and drummer Chris Layton. Barry helped write four songs on their first album, Can't Get Enough. This album was nominated for a Blues Music Award!

The Rides played with Neil Young in 2016. Later that year, they released their second album, Pierced Arrow.

Barry also produced and helped compose music for a documentary film called BANG! The Bert Berns Story, which came out in 2016.

His last CD, In the Groove, was released in 2018. It featured Barry playing different keyboards like the Hammond B3 organ.

Barry Goldberg's Life

Barry Goldberg was the nephew of a Supreme Court Justice named Arthur Goldberg. Barry Goldberg passed away on January 22, 2025, at the age of 83, due to health complications.
