Who Was Bartholomeus Breenbergh?
Bartholomeus Breenbergh was a talented artist from the Netherlands. He lived during the Dutch Golden Age, a time when Dutch art was very popular. He specialized in painting landscapes, often showing scenes that looked like they were from Italy.
His Early Life and Training
Breenbergh was born in a Dutch town called Deventer. After his father passed away in 1607, his family moved, probably to Hoorn. It is thought that he might have learned to paint there. Later, he was taught by well-known painters like Pieter Lastman and Jacob Symonsz Pynas.
Time in Rome: Learning and Influencing
In 1619, Breenbergh moved to Rome, Italy. This city was a big inspiration for many artists. He lived and worked with another painter, Frans van de Kasteele. He was greatly influenced by Paul Bril, a landscape painter from Flanders.
Later, Breenbergh was inspired by the Italian landscapes painted by Cornelis van Poelenburgh. Sometimes, it's even hard to tell their paintings apart! Breenbergh also influenced other artists, like the French landscape painter Claude Lorrain.

The Bentvueghels: An Artists' Club
Around 1620, Breenbergh helped start a special club in Rome. It was called the Bentvueghels, which means "Birds of a Feather." This was a group of Dutch and Flemish painters living in Rome. Each member got a nickname, and Breenbergh's nickname was "het fret," meaning "the ferret."
Back in Amsterdam: A Successful Career
In 1630, Breenbergh returned to Amsterdam in the Netherlands. He got married in 1633. He even received money from the court of King Charles I of Britain for his work.
He stayed in Amsterdam for the rest of his life. There, he created many popular paintings and etchings. Etchings are a type of printmaking. He often painted Italian buildings and landscapes. He also combined these Italian scenes with stories from the Bible or old myths.
Breenbergh had one student, Jan de Bisschop. His work also inspired other painters like Jan Linsen and Scipione Compagno.
