About Rabbi Baruch Dov Povarsky
Early Life and Family
Rabbi Povarsky was born in 1931 in a town called Kletsk. This town is now part of Belarus. His father was Rabbi Dovid Povarsky, and his mother was Chaya Tzipporah Povarsky.
When he was just three months old, his family moved to Baranovich. There, his father became a maggid shiur (a teacher) at a Jewish school called Yeshiva Ohel Torah. His father also joined a kollel, which is a place where married men study Jewish texts.
During this time, young Baruch Dov went to a local cheder. This is a traditional elementary school for Jewish boys.
Moving to Israel
In 1941, his family had to leave Baranovich because of dangers from the Nazis and Soviets. They traveled to Vilnius, Lithuania, along with many other people seeking safety. From there, they made the long journey to Israel.
Once in Israel, Rabbi Dovid Povarsky, Baruch Dov's father, was soon chosen to be the head of the Ponevezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak.
Education and Teaching
In Israel, Baruch Dov studied in several Jewish schools. He learned at Yeshivas Ohr HaTalmud and Yeshivas Achei Temimim. For a short time in 1943, he also studied at the Chevron Yeshiva.
However, after his father became the head of the Ponevezh Yeshiva, Baruch Dov also joined that school to continue his studies. He began teaching at the Ponevezh Yeshiva in 1953.
Later, after the previous head of the yeshiva, Rabbi Elazar Menachem Man Shach, passed away, Rabbi Baruch Dov Povarsky became the rosh yeshiva himself.
