A Sweet History
George Bassett began his candy business in 1842. He was a "wholesale confectioner," meaning he made and sold sweets to other businesses. In 1851, George Bassett took on an apprentice named Samuel Meggitt Johnson. Samuel later married Bassett's daughter, and his family continued to run the company for many years.
The first Bassett's factory opened in Sheffield in 1852. Later, in 1933, the factory moved to a new location in Owlerton, where it still stands today.
The Story of Jelly Babies
During the 1800s, soft sweets called "Unclaimed Babies" were popular. In 1918, Bassett's launched their own version, which they called "Peace Babies." These sweets were later renamed Jelly Babies in the 1950s.
Did you know that Jelly Babies were a favorite candy of George Harrison from The Beatles? Fans would sometimes throw them onto the stage during their concerts!
How Liquorice Allsorts Were Invented
The famous Liquorice Allsorts were created by accident! In 1899, a Bassett's salesman named Charlie Thompson was showing candy samples to a potential client. He accidentally dropped all the different samples on the floor.
The client saw the colorful mix and loved the idea of selling them all together. Because of this happy accident, the company let the client name the new candy, and that's how Liquorice Allsorts were born!
Over the years, Bassett's grew bigger. In 1966, they bought another candy company called Barratt & Co. Ltd. Then, in 1989, the larger Cadbury-Schweppes company bought Bassett's. In 2016, all Bassett's products started being sold under the new name, Maynards Bassetts.
