Maynards was a British company famous for making sweets, especially wine gums. It was bought by Cadbury in the 1990s. Later, Mondelez International bought Cadbury in 2010. In 2016, the Maynards brand joined with Bassett's to become Maynards Bassetts.

The Sweet History of Maynards

Charles Riley Maynard and his brother Tom started making sweets in 1880. They made the sweets right in their kitchen! Charles's wife, Sarah Ann, had a sweet shop next door. She sold their tasty treats to people in Stamford Hill, Hackney, London. Charles Riley Maynard was also the grandfather of Kenneth Maynard Wood, who later helped start the famous kitchen appliance company, Kenwood Ltd.

In 1896, the brothers officially formed the Maynards sweet company. Ten years later, in 1906, the company built a new factory. This factory was on Vale Road in Harringay, London. The new factory was in a great spot. It was near the New River, which provided clean spring water. This water was perfect for making sweets. Also, being close to the Lee Navigation and many railways made it easy to get supplies. They could easily ship coal, sugar, and gelatin to the factory.

Around the early 1900s, Charles Gordon, who was next in line to take over the company, had a new idea. He suggested that Maynards should start making "wine gums." His father, Charles Riley, was a very strict Methodist. This meant he did not drink alcohol at all. He was worried about the name "wine gums." But Charles Gordon explained that the new sweets would not have any alcohol in them. His father finally agreed. Maynards Wine Gums were first sold in 1909.

The factory in Harringay grew very big. It employed thousands of people from the local area. As Maynards became more popular, they opened other factories. One of these was a toffee factory in Newcastle upon Tyne.

In 1985, Maynards sold its 140 sweet shops. Then, in 1988, Cadbury bought the company. In 1990, Maynards joined with two other sweet brands: Bassett's and Trebor. By 1991, all their sweets were being made in Sheffield. By 2002, Maynards Wine Gums were very popular around the world. They made 40 million pounds sterling in sales each year!

Popular Maynards Sweets

Maynards makes many different kinds of sweets. Some of these are also sold by other companies like Unilever or Nestle in certain countries.
