History of Bassett

The land where Bassett is now located was once part of a huge area called Rancho La Puente. This was a large piece of land given by the Mexican government. Joseph Workman, whose father was William Workman, owned about 814 acres (3.3 square kilometers) of this land.
Joseph Workman borrowed money using his property as a guarantee. When he couldn't make the payments, the bank took ownership of the land. In 1895, a person named O.T. Bassett bought this property. That's how the area became known as Bassett Township.
Later, in 1921, Josephine (Workman) Akley, who was Joseph Workman's youngest child, tried to get back some of the land her father had sold. She won a lawsuit at first, but the decision was changed in 1922, and she did not get the land back.
