Bassingbourne studied law at a famous place called the Inner Temple in London. After finishing his studies, he became a Justice of the Peace in Norfolk by 1591. This job meant he helped keep law and order in his local area.
His Public Service
Sir Bassingbourne Gawdy held several important positions. He was chosen as the High Sheriff of Norfolk twice, first in 1593–94 and again in 1601–02. The High Sheriff was a very important local official. In 1605, he also worked as a deputy lieutenant for Norfolk.
He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Norfolk in 1601. Before that, he was an MP for Thetford in 1593 and again in 1604.
Knight and Inheritance
When his father passed away in 1590, Bassingbourne inherited his family's lands. These included estates in West Harling and Bardwell Hall in Suffolk. In 1597, he was given the title of knight, becoming "Sir" Bassingbourne Gawdy.
Sir Bassingbourne Gawdy passed away on 17 May 1606. He was buried in West Harling. His eldest son inherited his estates.

First Marriage
His first wife was Anne Framlingham. They were married and had three sons together. Anne passed away in 1594. Their sons were:
- Framlingham Gawdy (1589–1654): He was Sir Bassingbourne's main heir. Framlingham later became the father of Sir William Gawdy, who was the first of the Gawdy baronets of West Harling.
- Sir Charles Gawdy: He was the father of another Sir Charles Gawdy, who became the first of the Gawdy baronets of Crow's Hall.
Second Marriage
Sir Bassingbourne's second wife was Dorothy Bacon. They married in 1595. Dorothy was the daughter of Sir Nicholas Bacon. With Dorothy, Sir Bassingbourne had two more sons and three daughters. Dorothy lived longer than Sir Bassingbourne. She passed away in 1621.
