History of Batchtown
The area where Batchtown is located was once known as Richwoods in the 1850s. Later, people started calling it "Sam White's." This was because of a well-known merchant named Sam White who lived in Calhoun County.
The village then got another name, Batchelder Ville. This name came from William Batchelder, who lived there in the 1860s. In 1879, a post office opened in the community. That's when Batchtown became the official name of the village.
When Batchtown officially became a village, it had many stores and shops. The Grand Army of the Republic, a group for Civil War veterans, also had a local post there. The first Batchtown Methodist Church was also built around this time.
William Batchelder was an important person in the community. He owned a mill that first processed corn and later flour. He also worked as a justice of the peace and was a merchant.
Samuel White was another important citizen in Batchtown. He owned a store that sold many different items. These included groceries, clothing, shoes, and hardware. He also sold farm equipment to local farmers.
