A Look Back at Bateman's Past

How Bateman Started

Bateman began in the 1880s. It was named after one of the first people to settle there. In 1887, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad arrived. People hoped this would bring lots of growth and success to the area.

Early Challenges and Changes

A post office opened in Bateman in 1900. However, it closed just four years later, in 1904. This meant that mail and packages for the area had to go through Round Rock instead.

By the 1930s, Bateman was still very small. It had only two businesses and about 50 people living there. The population continued to shrink over time. By 2009, only 12 people lived in Bateman.

What People Do There

Today, the main ways people make a living in Bateman are through ranching. This means raising animals like cattle. There is also some oil extraction, which is the process of getting oil from the ground.

Where is Bateman Located?

Bateman is found on Farm to Market Road 86. This road helps connect it to other towns. It is about five miles southwest of Red Rock. The community is also 18 miles southwest of Bastrop. For those looking for a bigger city, Bateman is about 45 miles southeast of Austin.

Learning in Bateman

In the 1930s, Bateman had its own small school. It was a two-room schoolhouse where local children learned. Today, students in Bateman are part of the Bastrop Independent School District. This school district serves many communities in the area.
