Batt Reef is a beautiful coral reef located off the coast of Port Douglas in Queensland, Australia. It's a special part of the much larger Great Barrier Reef, which is one of the world's natural wonders.

Where is Batt Reef?

Batt Reef is found at coordinates 16°24′S 145°46′E. It stretches about 18 kilometers (11 miles) long and 5 kilometers (3 miles) wide. The reef lies in a northwest to southeast direction.

This amazing reef is on the northern side of the Trinity Passage. This passage is like a natural channel that connects the inner part of the Great Barrier Reef from Trinity Bay to the wide Pacific Ocean.

The northern tip of Batt Reef is about 15 kilometers (9 miles) east of the Low Islets. These islets include Low Island and Woody Island. From there, it's about 16 kilometers (10 miles) to Newell Beach and 11 kilometers (7 miles) northeast of Port Douglas.

A Moment in History

Batt Reef became well-known after a sad event involving Steve Irwin, a famous wildlife expert known as 'The Crocodile Hunter'. He was filming a documentary about ocean animals there in 2006 when he had an accident.
