Battle Island State Park is a fun place to visit in Oswego County, New York. This large state park covers about 235 acres (0.95 square kilometers). It sits right on the west bank of the Oswego River, just north of the city of Fulton. A big part of the park is the 18-hole Battle Island State Park Golf Course.

The Story Behind the Name

The name "Battle Island" comes from a real battle that happened nearby. On July 3, 1756, during the French and Indian War, a fight broke out. This war was a big conflict between Great Britain and France, with their Native American allies, over land in North America.

The 1756 Battle

A group of British soldiers was returning from delivering supplies to Fort Ontario. Suddenly, they were ambushed by French and Native American fighters. Even though the British and Colonial forces were outnumbered, they fought bravely. They used a small island as a strong defense point. This helped them push back several attacks.

Where the Battle Really Was

It's interesting to know that the island called "Battle Island" on maps today isn't the exact spot of the battle. That larger island was actually created later, when a nearby canal was dug. The real battle happened on a smaller island located just south of it.

How the Park Was Formed

The land that became Battle Island State Park was first owned by Frederick A. Emerick. He was a generous person who gave 200 acres (0.81 square kilometers) of his property to New York State in 1916. Later, in 1938, the rest of his land was also given to the state. That's when the area officially became a state park for everyone to enjoy.

What You Can Do at the Park

Battle Island State Park offers several activities for visitors. It's a great spot to spend time outdoors.

Golf Course Fun

One of the most popular attractions is the 18-hole golf course. It was designed by a famous golf course architect named Devereux Emmett. The course is a "par 72," which means a good golfer is expected to finish all 18 holes in 72 strokes. From the longest tees, the course stretches for 5,973 yards (5,462 meters).

Winter and More

When winter arrives, the park transforms! Its trails become perfect for cross-country skiing. This is a fun way to explore the park's snowy landscape. The park also has a food concession, so you can grab a snack or a drink while you're enjoying your visit.
