Why the Battle Happened
Before the battle, the Suevi king, Rechiar, was making his kingdom bigger. He was taking over land that belonged to the Roman Empire in a region called Hispania (which is now Spain). The Romans couldn't stop him on their own.
The Roman Emperor's Plan
The Roman Emperor at the time, Avitus, needed help. He asked his friends, the Visigoths and the Burgundians, to fight for him. The Visigoths were led by King Theodoric II. The Burgundians had two leaders, Gondiloc and Chilperic.
Theodoric agreed to help the Romans. He gathered his army and marched to meet the Suevi.
The Battle and Its Outcome
The two armies met near the Órbigo Bridge in a place called Órbigo. This was about twelve miles from a city called Astorga.
The Visigoths, fighting alongside the Burgundians and Romans, were very strong. They defeated King Rechiar and his Suevi army. This victory showed the power of the Visigoths. After the battle, they went on to capture and take valuable things from Braga, the Suevi capital.
What Happened Next
The Battle of Órbigo was a turning point. It greatly weakened the Suevi Kingdom. They lost much of their power and land. The Visigoths, on the other hand, became even more powerful in Hispania.
